- In 2001, independent pharmacies
dispensed 1.32 billion prescriptions; a number that has increased
annually since such statistics have been maintained.
- Independent pharmacies equal 44
percent of the total retail prescription market.
- Prescription medicines make up
88 percent of total annual sales for independent pharmacies
nationwide.
- Average annual sales for
independent pharmacies in the year 2001 were $2.45 million; up
over six percent over 2000.
- Average prescription sales were
$2.15 million in 2001; an increase of almost ten percent over
2000.
- The average number of
prescriptions dispensed per independent pharmacy was 53,808 in
2001; an average of 172 per day.
- There are nearly 25,000
single-store independent pharmacies, independent chains,
independent franchises, and independent pharmacist-owned
supermarket pharmacies.
- 44 percent of the 55,581 total
pharmacies in the United States are independent pharmacies.
